Worming and Ticks
« on: July 30, 2010, 11:20:57 AM »
Ok I had been using ivomec for years then noticed it wasn't working as well so went to cydecdin about 18 months ago.  Worked well until about 6 months ago when I intoduced some jersey's in my herd.  Now I have had ticks all winter and looks like worms as well.

Question 1:   Are deadicated wormers better than the worm and tick pour ons?

Question 2:   Is it better to alternate pour ons rather than use till does work anymore?

Question 3:   Can you get worm and/or tick dips/pour ons that can be used on milkers?

Thanks
Trev

Reasonably nourished adult cows should not be too worried by worms, so cattle ticks are probably your main worry?

I'm not certain but I think Cydectin and Ivomec are somewhat similar drugs. In which case it is possible that there is cross resistance to both in the parasites.

#2 It is definitely better to change chemical before it fails. However if you've only got a couple of cows then I'm surprised that the ticks have gained resistance so fast.

If I were you, I would check out other cattle tick control treatments and not worry too much about trying to find something that does both ticks and worms.

I've read that guinea fowl are great for ticks (obviously as a predator not as a pour on).

Sort of like other infamous forms of biological control, like cane toads!

We inject with Dectomax.  It is supposed to kill both internal and external parasites.

We used to have a spray for ticks, but haven't used it since using the dectomax.

You can get a vaccine from the DPI it is called 'Blooding' your cattle.  You want the 3 strain, not the 1 strain.  That is to prevent tick fever.

Then if you find a beast down you know that it has 3 day fever and can recover.  If they go down with tick fever they can die.

We have beef cattle, not milkers so you might have to ask if the things I said are okay for milkers.

Gee, there are a few things I can't let go though to the keeper....

Dectomax is another mectin type drug, so if the parasites already have resistance to ivomec then they'll likely have it to Dectomax.

Tick fever vaccine is to give the cattle resistance to a disease that ticks carry. They gain resistance to Tick fever. It has absolutely no protective effect against cattle ticks.  To be fully imunised the cattle should also be done for leptospitosis, three in one clostridial (tetanus etc) and bovine ephermeral (three day) fever.

Guinea fowl are not sufficient to give adequate control of cattle ticks.

Hi guys

I have one jersey and one jersey cross and have been using Noromectin on them (it's a pour on) and it has been keeping ticks at bay. I live just north of Brisbane and the tick season has already started with a bang - it's going to be a bad season this year. Noromectin can be used on milking cows with no withholding period required.

Hope this helps
