This is a natural product registered with the Australian Veterinary and Pesticides Authority for use against insect pests of stored grain and registered as an allowable input for organic farmers by the BFA. It is currently the only diatomaceous earth available in Australia which has undergone the stringent APVMA testing criteria. Australia has very strict rules regarding the sale of products for animal or human health. Specifically this product is not certified as human food grade (and there are no such products currently available in Australia). Absorbacide is a pure product with no additives.
Beware, some diatomite products are being sold that use inferior grade diatomite inappropriately treated. This material has not been scientifically tested to establish efficacy. Only Absorbacide has met the stringent regulatory criteria to allow it to make claims regarding its effectiveness as an insect control suitable for crops or grains destined for human or animal consumption.
Diatomaceous fines, also available from Ozfarmer, is a similar product that has not undergone this testing but may be suited to general pest control and stock feed use.
Absorba-Cide kills insects by absorbing oils and waxes from the insect cuticle thus facilitating moisture loss and death by dehydration. In addition, the shards of silica in the material abrade the animal leading to its physical disintegration. Resistance is not likely since it is the physical and not chemical properties of Absorba-Cide that make it an effective insecticide. It can be used in powder form in gardens to counteract snails, slugs and caterpillars and also mixed in water as an insecticidal spray. It can be used in a variety of ways to prevent insect infestations of grain silos and other food storage facilities.
Aside from its certified use as an insecticide and very effective insecticide particularly in grain storage, industry trials are currently underway to:
- examine the ability of Absorba-Cide to kill the darkling beetle, a pest of commercial earthen floor chicken houses
- examine the effectiveness of Absorba-Cide against the bedbug, an increasing problem in hotels and hospitals as these pests are becoming resistant to common insecticides.
- examine the effects of Absorba-Cide on the Red Mite and lice infestations of laying chickens.
- examine the effectiveness of Absorba_Cide and other diatomite preparations on internal parasites of poultry and sheep.
Please note that animal and human therapeutic products are highly regulated in Australia. Special certification is required to make claims about any benefits to animals and even stricter controls apply for claims relating to human health benefits. Absorba-cide meets the requirements for animal therapeutic products.
Similar products internationally are labelled as food grade product but such certification is not currently required in Australia.
