Twist top lids can be used to recycle most supermarket jars. The lid size is determined by measuring the distance between the lugs on the underside of the lid.
Twist top lids are not designed for pressure canning or for long periods of water bath preserving. They are best suited to jams, chutneys and pickles which only require processing times up to 15 minutes.
Note that most jars that take twist top lids are not as highly tempered as jars specifically made for preserving which have much higher heat tolerance and so are less inclined to break under heat stress.
